Suggestions for Using the Activity

MODELING OF SKILLS
When using these activities with your class for the first time, we suggest that you model the activity with your class. Working through one of the texts as a think-aloud will demonstrate for your students not only how to complete the activity, but also to become aware of the thinking that takes place when inferring.

REPETITION OF SKILLS
In order to improve their inferencing skills, students need time and opportunity to practise (US - practice). It is suggested to space out, over the course of several weeks, the days when you use these activities. We recommend that you don’t use these activities daily and that you don’t use more than one text per day, even if your students want to! Spreading out the practice will have a bigger long term impact on the development of their inferencing skills.

TRANSFER OF SKILLS
Our activities allow students to develop the ability to find clues in a text, and to piece them together in order to come up with new information. Guide your students through the process of transferring what they learned during these activities to other reading tasks. In the long term, the consistency and repetition of the use of these skills will help your students to improve their reading comprehension.
